How to Apply for a Fresh Passport in India

Register on Passport Seva Portal

Visit passportindia.gov.in and click "New User Registration". Create an account with your email and set a password. Verify your email address.

Fill the Online Application Form

Log in and select "Apply for Fresh Passport". Fill in personal details, address, family information, and emergency contacts carefully. Save as draft frequently.

Pay the Fee and Book Appointment

Pay the passport fee online (₹1,500 for 36-page booklet, ₹2,000 for 60-page). Select your nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) and book an appointment slot.

Visit PSK with Original Documents

On appointment day, carry originals and self-attested copies of all required documents. At the PSK, your documents will be verified, biometrics captured, and photo taken.

Police Verification & Delivery

After PSK visit, police verification is conducted at your address. Once cleared, your passport is dispatched by Speed Post. Track status on the portal. Normal passports arrive within 30–45 days; Tatkaal within 7–10 days.

  • Proof of Address: Aadhaar card, voter ID, utility bill, or bank passbook
  • Proof of Date of Birth: Birth certificate, Class 10 mark sheet, Aadhaar card
  • Proof of Identity: Aadhaar card or voter ID
  • Recent passport-size photographs (white background)
  • Annexures A/B/C/D/E/F as applicable (for special cases)

What is the difference between Normal and Tatkaal passport?

Normal passport takes 30–45 days and costs ₹1,500 (36 pages). Tatkaal is an urgent scheme costing ₹3,500 (36 pages) and is delivered in 7–10 days after expedited police verification.

Can I apply for a passport without an Aadhaar card?

Yes. Aadhaar is not mandatory. You can use voter ID, driving licence, utility bill, or bank passbook as address proof, and birth certificate or Class 10 marksheet as DOB proof.

How do I track my passport application status?

Log in to passportindia.gov.in and go to "Track Application Status". Alternatively, call the national helpline 1800-258-1800 (toll-free) or send an SMS to 9704100100 with your file number.
