1

Identify the Purpose and Requirement

Income certificates are required for: EWS (Economically Weaker Section) reservation (family income below ₹8 lakh/year), scholarships and fee concessions, BPL schemes, ration card eligibility, and pension schemes. Confirm the income threshold required by the scheme you are applying for.

2

Gather Required Documents

You will need: (a) Aadhaar card of applicant; (b) Ration card; (c) Income proof — salary slips or Form 16 (for salaried), land records or self-declaration (for farmers), or a self-declaration affidavit (for daily wage earners); (d) Proof of residence; (e) Bank passbook (in some states).

3

Apply via State e-District Portal

Log in to your state's e-district portal. Navigate to "Revenue Services" → "Income Certificate". Fill in your annual family income from all sources (agriculture, salary, business, rent, etc.). Upload required documents and submit. You will receive an acknowledgment with a reference number for tracking.

4

Tehsildar Verification

The revenue department will verify the income claim. They may contact your employer, check land records, or conduct a field visit. The process typically takes 7–21 working days depending on the state.

5

Download or Collect Certificate

Once approved, download the digitally signed income certificate from the portal or collect it from the tehsil office. Income certificates are usually valid for 1 year (financial year) and must be renewed for each application cycle.

  • Aadhaar card
  • Ration card
  • Salary slips / Form 16 (salaried) or self-declaration (others)
  • Land records (farmers)
  • Proof of residence
  • Bank passbook (if required by state)

Is income certificate required for EWS reservation?

Yes. EWS reservation (10% for General category) requires an income and asset certificate confirming that the family income is below ₹8 lakh per annum and you do not own 5 acres or more of agricultural land, a residential plot of 100 sq yards or more in notified municipalities, etc.

Can a self-employed person get an income certificate?

Yes. Self-employed individuals, daily wage workers, and farmers can get income certificates by submitting a self-declaration affidavit stating their approximate annual income. The tehsildar may cross-verify with local records.

How often do I need to renew the income certificate?

Income certificates are valid for 1 financial year in most states. You must renew annually if using it for recurring benefits like scholarships or OBC non-creamy layer status. For one-time uses like a loan application, a fresh certificate is needed each time.
