How to Apply for a Caste Certificate

1

Check Eligibility and Category

A caste certificate is issued for Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Other Backward Class (OBC). Eligibility is determined by which community you belong to, as listed in the state/central government schedules. OBC certificates also have a non-creamy layer requirement for reservation benefits.

2

Gather Required Documents

Required documents: (a) Application form (from official portal or district office); (b) Aadhaar card; (c) Ration card showing caste; (d) Father's or grandfather's caste certificate (if available); (e) School leaving certificate (showing caste); (f) Proof of residence; (g) Self-declaration or affidavit. Exact requirements vary by state.

3

Apply Online via State Portal

Visit your state's e-district portal (e.g., edistrict.up.gov.in for UP, mee-seva.gov.in for Telangana, districts.nic.in for your state). Register with your mobile number, login, select "Caste Certificate" under revenue services, fill the form, upload documents, and submit. Note your application reference number.

4

Verification by Tehsildar / Revenue Officer

The tehsildar or revenue officer will verify your application. They may conduct a field inquiry at your residence or contact you for additional information. In some states, a Patwari or village headman also provides a verification report. This process usually takes 15–30 working days.

5

Collect / Download the Certificate

Once approved, you will receive an SMS/email notification. Online applicants can download the digitally signed certificate from the portal. Offline applicants must collect it from the tehsil office. The certificate is valid for life (SC/ST) or until the applicant enters the creamy layer (OBC).

Can I use a central government caste certificate across all states?

For central government jobs and institutions (UPSC, IITs, central universities), a state-issued caste certificate is generally accepted. However, for state government jobs and reservations, you typically need a certificate from the same state where you are applying.

How long is a caste certificate valid?

SC and ST certificates are valid for life. OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) certificates are typically valid for 1–3 years and need to be renewed, as income eligibility for non-creamy layer must be re-verified periodically.

What is the difference between SC/ST and OBC certificates?

SC and ST communities are listed in the Constitution's schedules. OBC is a broader category covering socially and educationally backward classes. OBC certificates also check for the "creamy layer" — if your family income exceeds a threshold (currently ₹8 lakh/year), you do not qualify for OBC reservation benefits.
